FORT DRUM, New York (WWNY) - Nearly 80 civilian jobs at Fort Drum’s Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield will be gone by the end of the year as spending cuts in Washington hit the North Country’s economy.
“Their contract was cut due to the Department of Defense, you know, budget cuts,” said Cheryl Mayforth, executive director of The Workplace.
She says The Workplace received notice in August from Amentum, the company with the Army contract, that the 78 jobs would be cut.
The notice says the layoffs will start in November, with all of them cut by year’s end.
The positions are within aviation maintenance, including 46 aircraft mechanics.
“We’re not sure how that’s going to affect the airfield. There are other government contractors that are located there that also do repairs,” said Mayforth.
