FORT DRUM, New York (WWNY) - Fort Drum could be losing dozens of civilian airfield jobs if a government contractor follows through with an official notice it gave Jefferson County.
Nearly 80 civilian jobs at Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield on Fort Drum are anticipated to be gone by the end of the year under spending cuts in Washington
“Their contract was cut due to the Department of Defense, you know, budget cuts,” said Cheryl Mayforth, executive director of The Workplace.
She says The Workplace received notice in August from Amentum, the company with the Army contract, that 78 of its jobs could be cut.
The notice says the layoffs are expected to start in November, with all of them cut by year’s end.
The positions are within aviation maintenance, including 46 aircraft mechanics.
