SARASOTA, Fla. ( WWSB ) - Sarasota Police say they caught a real leadfoot Tuesday morning.

Police say a driver was clocked doing 88 mph on the Ringling Causeway Bridge, a 35 mph zone.

A Facebook post showed a photo of the radar gun readout. “Today’s driver? 88 in a 35. Arrested. Taken to jail,” the social media post said.

Police did not release the drivers’ name but noted it was 53 mph over the posted limit.

For the record, 88 mph is 11.56% of the speed of sound, or Mach 1.

As of July 1, Florida’s new “Super Speeder” law makes it a crime to drive 100 mph or more, or more than 50 mph over the posted limit.

Police say first-time penalties can include:

Up to $500 in fines

Up to 30 days in jail

Mandatory court appearance
