SPRINGFIELD, MO - The Ozarks’ best-known historic highway could become part of the National Park Service under a bill supported by several Republicans and Democrats in Washington.
Missouri U-S Senator Eric Schmitt is one of several lawmakers introducing the Route 66 National Historic Trail (H.R. 5470, S. 2887).
Members of Congress say the designation would help states and towns along the way by boosting tourism, supporting economic growth, and preserving history. Supporters say the proposal could help revitalize struggling communities located on the corridor.
If it comes to pass, the federal designation would allocate federal money and employees for various Route 66-related programs.
The historic path of Route 66 cuts across southwest Missouri, passing through Saint Louis, Rolla, Sprin
