AKWESASNE — Hundreds of people wearing orange shirts descended on Generations Park in the southern district of Akwesasne on Tuesday to mark the fifth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Also commonly known as Orange Shirt Day , Sept. 30 was designated in Canada to observe the impacts of colonization and cultural genocide on Indigenous communities, particularly the impact of the residential school system. It was first observed in British Columbia in 2013 and became federally recognized in 2021 .

Organized events for the day kicked off at 8:30 a.m., with an orange shirt give away on a first come first serve basis. It was followed by a community walk from Mill Street to Generations Park.

An opening ceremony was held at the Lacrosse Box in Generations Park to honour the community
