TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — An East Valley grandmother accused of horrifying mistreatment of a teen girl with special needs died while in custody earlier this month, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Tuesday.

Arizona’s Family has learned that 56-year-old Virginia Lujan was taken to the hospital on Sept. 2, where she died. Details surrounding her death weren’t revealed, but no foul play is suspected, the sheriff’s office said.

Lujan had been accused of abusing a 13-year-old girl who had a cognitive delay and had the mental capacity of a 3-year-old , the Tempe Police Department reported in January. She was then indicted on several felony charges in February.
