ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A Cahokia Heights family is calling for safety improvements after a deadly hit-and-run on Bond Avenue.

Michael Jackson says his 74-year-old uncle, Gary Witherspoon, was crossing the street when he was hit and killed.

“There’s no lights, there’s no lighting, there’s no crosswalk… It’s been an ongoing thing here,” Jackson said.

He says Witherspoon had just stepped out for a quick errand.

“He was going to get some bread and come back home, like he always does. Going to get a soda pop, whatever he wants. They said he didn’t make it back,” Jackson said.

Jackson believes the lack of sidewalks and lighting makes the road unsafe.

“It should be something in place, period. You’ve got two bus stops here, but you have nothing in place to cross the street though.
