An inner-Sydney council has approved a massive 31,000-home development plan, as NIMBYs exploded in Town Hall.

On Tuesday night, Inner West councillors voted on the plan to rezone vast swathes of residential land in the government area and build thousands of high-density apartments in the next 15 years.

Council’s vote followed heated protests and public submissions from those opposing and supporting the development.

All eight Labor councillors supported the Our Fairer Future Plan, narrowly beating out seven opposing councillors.

The Ashfield Civic Centre's public gallery divided instantly, with supporters applauding the move while the plan’s detractors yelled “shame”.

Many held placards reading “scrap the plan” and “defend don’t demolish”.
