A man has been critically injured after being stabbed in Sydney's south west and left at a petrol station, in front of terrified onlookers.

Just after 10pm on Tuesday, emergency services rushed to a Shell station on Horsley Drive in Wetherill Park after reports of a stabbing.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the 45-year-old man at the scene before he was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes, as paramedics treated the man in clear view of families and youths eating at both a nearby Oporto a McDonald's.

Police believe the man was stabbed on Elizabeth Street, only a short walk from the station.

It is understood someone drove him from the scene of the stabbing to the service station, where emergency services were called.
