A petition is calling on the GNWT to integrate structured literacy into Northern curriculums, warning that Northern kids are falling behind.
Organized by former long-time educator and parent Sierra Daley, the petition makes several asks of the Department of Education — notably to mandate early universal screening between kindergarten and Grade 2 to ensure students who struggle with reading don't slip through the cracks. In addition, it seeks to develop culturally-relevant literacy materials in collaboration with Elders and communities, provide literacy coaching to all educators and to mandate "structured literacy" in the curriculum.
