The process of securing an appointment with your GP is set to be completely transformed from today. Putting an end to the infamous "8am scramble", GP practices will be operating a brand new system from Wednesday - with patients no longer compelled to repeatedly hit redial simply to speak with a receptionist.

Whilst the situation appears beneficial for patients, GPs have cautioned the major overhaul could trigger a "tsunami of requests", inundating surgeries with more work than they can manage. The British Medical Association (BMA) is concerned patients could be placed at risk as surgeries become overwhelmed by a flood of requests.

Doctors have even threatened industrial action unless protective measures are put in place immediately, which could cause chaos across the remainder of the NH
