Leo Garcia Venegas, a construction worker in Baldwin County, filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security on Monday after recently being detained in immigration raids.
The Institute for Justice (IJ), a national libertarian law firm, is representing Venegas in the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama. Venegas was briefly detained twice in May and June while working in construction in Baldwin County despite being a U.S. citizen, according to IJ.
“Armed and masked federal officers are raiding private construction sites in Alabama, detaining whoever they think looks undocumented, and ignoring proof of citizenship,” said IJ Attorney Jared McClain. “That’s unconstitutional, and this case seeks to bring that practice to an end.”
