Up to 44 areas across Britain face the prospect of power outages, mobile phone blackouts and transport chaos as Storm Amy prepares to unleash fierce winds this Friday and Saturday, meteorologists have cautioned.

Weather experts have officially christened Storm Amy as the latest tempest poised to pummel the nation, issuing a yellow alert spanning 30 hours from 6pm on Friday, October 3, through to 11.59pm on Saturday, October 4, warning of severe gales.

The Met Office stated in its advisory: "Storm Amy is likely lead to disruption during Friday and Saturday. Storm Amy is expected to bring a spell of very strong winds to many parts of northern Britain later on Friday and into Saturday.

"Westerly winds will pick up during Friday, initially in the west before extending eastwards
