RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The North Carolina Department of Transportation officially has a new leader.
Daniel Johnson, who recently served as the department’s deputy secretary and general counsel, was elevated to NCDOT secretary after being sworn into the role on Wednesday.
Back in September, Governor Josh Stein named Johnson as the successor to former Secretary Joey Hopkins, who retired after more than 30 years working in the department.
Johnson had been in his previous position since 2019. Prior to that time, he worked in private practice as well as an assistant district attorney in Wake County. He also served as a surface warfare officer in the U.S. Navy. • Daniel Johnson swore into his new role as the head of the North Carolina Department of Transportation on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025.
