BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The Kern County Public Works Department is set to celebrate the grand opening of its Shafter-Wasco Compost Facility, which the department called “a major step forward in sustainable waste management and environmental stewardship.”

The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14. It is set to be held at the Shafter-Wasco Recycling & Sanitary Landfill, located at 17621 Scofield Ave. in Shafter, according to the department.

Public Works received a $10 million grant from CalRecycle’s Organics Grant Program in March 2024 for the construction of the facility, according to county officials.

Construction began the following month in April 2024 and was completed in September this year.
