WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - A member of the Watertown Police Department is on administrative leave following a “use of force incident.”

In a news release, the department states that the incident happened at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building on September 24 at approximately 10:30 a.m.

Officials said it involved a member of the city police department. 7 News has learned the employee is a veteran of the force.

Following an internal investigation, the employee was placed on administrative leave.

State police have been asked to conduct an independent criminal investigation.

The state Attorney General’s Office was also notified as required by law.

Police released no further details.
