EUGENE, Ore. - A novel attempt to evade the law ended for a Eugene man in his arrest near Eugene City Hall on Sunday morning, according to the Eugene Police Department.

EPD officials said that officers responded just past 8 a.m. on Sept. 28 to a situation on the Willamette River involving a makeshift vessel. Patrick David Jackson, 57, crafted a floating raft using a box spring, wood pallet, and Styrofoam, secured with chicken wire. He was found anchored a few feet from the riverbank, seemingly having spent the night afloat. Officers instructed Jackson to come ashore, but police said he refused. Police officers managed to drag the vessel to land using a pitchfork, safely taking Jackson into custody.
