NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Criminal District Court Judge Simone Levine has sentenced the former Orleans Parish 911 director, Tyrell Morris, to one year in prison after being convicted of malfeasance in office, insurance fraud, injuring public records and impersonating a peace officer.

Outside the courthouse, District Attorney Jason Williams was critical of the sentence as prosecutors had asked for the maximum penalty. He called what Morris did an abuse of power, emphasizing that if it were just a regular person, they wouldn't be this lucky.

"If you turned on, if you had police lights and you weren't supposed to have in your vehicle, and you got in a wreck with someone overnight, and got caught doing it. You'd probably get a lot more time than a year," said DA Williams.
