SUMNER COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) - Kansas farmers are sounding the alarm over soybean tariffs as China halts purchasing of the crop from the U.S. This is a problem because China is our country’s largest soybean importer.
China hasn’t purchased soybeans from American farmers since May, a stoppage that’s really starting to put stress on Kansas farmers who rely on the crop to make ends meet.
Sumner County farmer James Moreland is among the frustrated Kansas farmers who see a “great looking soybean crop coming on,” but no major market for it.
“The hole of China buying 60% of the world’s soybeans, when you take that out of our market, it’s a big hole that we just can’t fill,” Moreland said.
How big of a hole?
“Right now, you know, we’re growing soybeans at basically a deficit,” Moreland said.
