As part of our 70th anniversary , KCRA 3 is taking a look through our archives at various community stories we covered over the decades.
On Oct. 10, 1977, KCRA 3 covered a “Freeway Frolic” event to celebrate the completion of a seven-mile stretch of Interstate 5 north of Hammer Lane in Stockton.
People took to the roadway by bike or parachute. Proceeds from charging $1 raised money for people with disabilities.
Our reporter noted at the time that construction was set to continue toward Highway 12.
The final stretch of I-5 was completed on Oct. 12, 1979 , near Stockton. Representatives from Canada and Mexico attended to celebrate the freeway’s achievement in connecting all three countries.
