SPENCER, Iowa (KTIV) - Spencer, Iowa’s wastewater treatment plant has been in service for more than 50 years. But, after major flooding in 2024 overwhelmed the system, city officials say it’s clear the infrastructure needs an upgrade.
Now, the city has launched a long-term master plan to modernize, and protect, critical systems for the future.
Over the years, aging pipes, increased demand, and limited capacity have stressed the system. Those challenges came to a head in 2024, when severe flooding exposed the vulnerabilities in both the sanitary and storm sewer networks.
