A video from Punjab's Gurdaspur district showing a daughter-in-law beating her elderly mother-in-law in front of her son has gone viral on social media.

In the video, the mother-in-law is seen repeatedly pleading with her son to intervene while the daughter-in-law continues slapping, hitting her with a glass and abusing her.

Following the circulation of the video, a complaint was filed. The Punjab Women’s Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and written to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Gurdaspur. The Commission has requested that the matter be investigated by a senior police officer and has sought an action taken report by October 2.
