When you think of fine art, you might think of oil paintings, bronze sculptures or gravity-defying glasswork. You might not think of a colorful quilt, fuzzy felted object or embroidery, perhaps because those types of items have traditionally been created by women, said Kelly Mead, director of the new William Scofield fiber arts and textile gallery on Officers Row.

Mead would like to change that. The gallery’s masculine moniker — a combination of her husband’s and son’s middle names and her mother’s maiden name — is part of her strategy. The name is also an oblique reference to place, she said, because the Schofields are a prominent Vancouver family (though no relation to her mother).
