BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Nearly everyone knows someone who has been impacted by breast cancer.

Dr. Rachel Bryant, a surgeon at Tristar Greenview Hospital in Bowling Green, treats women with breast cancer. She says breast cancer is the most common type of cancer women face and, because of its prevalence, it is one of the top reasons for death among women.

Since breast cancer can be deadly, Dr. Bryant says early detection is the key. And, some women are more at risk than others.

Mammogram screenings should begin, on average, by the time a woman reaches forty years of age.

But some women need mammography screenings sooner, such as women who have a family history of breast cancer, and women who are of eastern European or African descent.
