Several car companies reported record sales of electric vehicles in September as drivers rushed to buy vehicles before the end of a popular federal incentive.

On Tuesday, the $7,500 Clean Vehicle Tax Credit for new EVs expired, in accordance with the tax and spending bill President Donald Trump signed in July.

Tesla reported Thursday delivering a record number of EVs in the third quarter, driven by sales of its bestselling Model Y and Model 3. Globally, the company delivered 497,099 electric vehicles in the third quarter — up 7.4% from about 463,000 during the same quarter last year.

On Wednesday, General Motors, Ford Motor Co., Hyundai and Kia also reported record EV sales for September and the third quarter, driven largely by the federal tax credit’s expiration.
