ELYRIA, Ohio — The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a Traffic Safety Grant from the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Ohio Traffic Safety Office to bolster its roadway safety efforts across the county for the next year.

The grant is awarded to jurisdictions with an average of two or more fatal crashes over three years. Between 2022 and 2024, Lorain County averaged 25 fatal crashes, according to a news release. The total amount awarded to Lorain County is $105,976.02.

The funding will strengthen proactive traffic law enforcement in the areas most impacted by roadway safety issues. It will also target behaviors most often linked to serious and fatal accidents, including impaired and distracted driving, excessive speeding, improper seat belt use and failure to properly secur
