BRUNSWICK, Maine — A Topsham man had to be rescued Wednesday afternoon after becoming stuck waist-deep in mud while duck hunting in Maquoit Bay.
Brunswick police said 31-year-old Matthew Alexander called 911 at about 2:11 p.m. to report he was trapped in the mud off Wharton Point and could not get back to shore.
Alexander told dispatchers he had been hunting from an embankment and tried to retrieve several ducks he had shot when he suddenly sank. The more he struggled, he said, the deeper he became.
Officers used the department's Marine Patrol airboat to reach Alexander and free him. Police said it took two officers to pull him out and break the suction holding him in place. The ducks were later retrieved.
Because of his exposure to cold ocean water, Alexander was taken by Brunswick Re
