Pelham council narrowly voted 4-3 to repair, not replace, the town’s aging public pool — a move that goes against staff recommendations and forfeits $1 million in grant funding.

The decision is likely to shutdown pool operations in 2026 and offer only a temporary fix, as repairs are expected to extend the facility’s life by five to 10 years.

Town staff, external consultants and some councillors had recommended a permanent solution, either rebuilding at its current location in Marlene Stewart Streit Park, or constructing a new pool at the Meridian Community Centre.

Council was warned the fix would not resolve the 60-year-old pool’s core issues, only delay a more expensive solution.
