SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) - Kwik Star announced a new cash transaction policy due to the U.S. Department of Treasury's choice to end production of the penny.

According to a press release from Kwik Trip, since stores are running out of pennies by location and the federal government hasn't provided guidance on how to proceed, all cash purchases at Kwik Trip/Kwik Star stores will be rounded down to the nearest five cents.

Until a permanent legislative solution has been enacted, Kwik Star will continue with this approach.

Pennies remain legal tender and Kwik Star's updated register systems will automatically round down all cash transactions. Card transactions will remain the same.
