WACO, Texas — Waco's waste system is entering a new era with the opening of a brand-new landfill. But while the landfill may be ready for trash, it's not quite ready for the public.

After more than 40 years of service, Waco's current landfill is finally getting a replacement. The new facility, located in Axtell, east of Waco, officially opened on Oct. 1, but it won't be open to the public just yet.

"It's a really great milestone, but the public needs to understand we're only accepting City of Waco trucks right now," Solid Waste Division Public Outreach Coordinator Jessica Emmett-Sellers said.
