Spring has only just sprung, and the grass fires have already started, which has local NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) authorities watching things closely.

Weather forecasts, combined with local conditions, has the RFS expecting a potentially average fire season, unless things turn dry.

In recent weeks, brigades have been busy undertaking hazard reduction burns, such as the recent one around Oxley Lookout, to create a break for the residents of East Tamworth. That work is set to be finalised during the weekend of October 11 and 12.

Tamworth RFS's Acting District Manager, Inspector Boyd Townsend, noted there had been four grass fires in one day at the end of September within the Tamworth Local Government Area.
