Germany's Munich Airport has re-opened after several drone sightings around the airport on Thursday evening halted flights.

Nearly 3,000 passengers were grounded, 17 departing flights were cancelled and 15 arriving flights were diverted to other cities, including Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna and Frankfurt.

Camp beds were set up, and blankets, drinks, and snacks were provided to affected passengers, a statement from Munich Airport said.

German authorities have launched a search to identify the origin of the drones.

Police helicopters were deployed but "no information is available on the type and number of drones," the airport's spokesperson said.

The incident came ahead of the final weekend of Germany's Oktoberfest, which draws hundreds of thousands of people every day to Munich.
