NFL fans have called for legendary broadcaster Al Michaels to retire after a troubled performance last night.

The 80-year-old was the lead television announcer for the San Francisco 49ers ' 26-23 overtime win at the Los Angeles Rams .

Michaels was caught out making multiple mistakes as he fronted Amazon Prime 's broadcast of the NFC West game.

Visiting 49ers remain without star quarterback Brock Purdy, 25 , as they picked up a late win.

He has been in sports broadcasting since the 1960s, but many fans believe it is time for the veteran to retire.

The broadcaster appeared confused throughout the game as he continues as the face of Thursday Night Football .

Perhaps his worst mistake was the mispronunciation of Rams wide receiver Jordan Whittington, 25.
