GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — John Ball Zoo has finally revealed the name of its pygmy hippo calf: Hugo.

The zoo announced the name Friday afternoon in a social media post. The name was chosen by the public during a weeklong contest. Voters were able to choose between Hugo, Blitz and Sapo.

“His name means smart and spirited, just like we expect him to be,” zoo officials said in a Facebook post.

Hugo made history Sept. 3 as the first pygmy hippo to be born at the zoo.

His parents, Penelope and Jahari, are part of the Species Survival Plan, a program that works with zoos across North America to ensure the survival of endangered animals, according to John Ball Zoo’s website.
