Police in Warwick, Rhode Island, said Friday that an investigation has revealed it was "simply an unfortunate accident" that a 5-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle being driven by an off-duty state police trooper a day earlier.

Warwick police began investigating the incident after they were called to Boylston Street around 3 p.m. Thursday for a report of a boy, who had been hit by a vehicle. Responding officers learned the vehicle involved was no longer on scene, and immediately shared the vehicle's description, which was gathered based on witness descriptions and residential video surveillance in the area.
