SAGINAW, MI - When nursing student Julianna Scherzer turned on a birthing simulator for the first time during her Sept. 24 class, she didn’t know that within an hour the scene would be playing out in front of her again - this time for real.

Scherzer, 27, a Davenport University freshman from Bay City, was just four weeks into her nursing program when she helped deliver a baby in a Saginaw hospital parking lot. She had not yet seen a real birth, even in class.

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, she was on her way to visit a friend at Covenant Medical Center Harrison in Saginaw after her class on Davenport University’s Great Lakes Bay campus.

Scherzer had just opened her car door when she heard a man calling for help and a woman screaming.
