The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is urging people to be aware of the risks of lithium-ion batteries during Fire Prevention Week which starts tomorrow.

“Charge into Fire Safety” is the theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week, highlighting the importance of buying, charging and recycling lithium-ion batteries safely.

Almost all rechargeable equipment uses lithium-ion batteries, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, headphones, power tools, toys, and lawn tools.

If not used correctly, or if damaged, lithium-ion batteries can overheat, start a fire, or even explode.

The fire department advises that in order to reduce risk, buy only products that contains a label from a nationally-recognized testing lab, such as ULC, on the packaging and the product.
