A 56-year-old man killed in an altercation in Jasper, Alta., is being remembered as a well-known and beloved character in the mountain town.

Douglas Gunville, who lived both in Jasper and his hometown of nearby Valemount, B.C., died on Sept. 27 following an altercation outside the Jasper Legion.

"It's very hard for locals not to know who Doug was," said Shane Rushton, who first met Gunville more than 30 years ago.

Rushton says the two met while working at Marmot Basin Ski Resort. His friend was "short, fat and could ski better than most Olympians."

He described Gunville as a "colourful character" who enjoyed meeting the seasonal workers who came and left Jasper.
