ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A Covington woman was accused of vehicular homicide in connection with the death of an 8-year-old.

According to the Louisiana State Police, troopers responded to a crash on Highway 40 just east of Hurd Road. The car, a 2009 Toyota Camry, ran off the road and struck a tree while approaching a left-hand curve. 8-year-old Jewel Leger of Covington, who was riding in the front seat and was unrestrained, died in the crash.

LSP officials said toxicology tests were taken from the driver, 39-year-old Candace Leblanc of Covington. Leblanc's blood allegedly contained impairing drugs at the time of the crash.
