The term “woke” comes from African American vernacular and originally meant being aware of social injustices, especially racism.

So how did woke become a negative term? It has been applied by some (such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Trump administration officials) as an insult to those who are or appear to be politically left-leaning.

Now, the term has been co-opted by bigots to denigrate people who advocate for diversity, equality and inclusion. How un-American!

What could be more American than advocating for diversity, equality and inclusion in our great American melting pot? Just read the inscription on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.”
