Let’s stop pretending this is accidental. Governments and major newsrooms are not helpless victims of the news cycle. They pick winners and losers. They decide whose suffering gets the full court press and whose barely merits a paragraph. In 2024 and 2025, Gaza has dominated Canada’s streets, screens, and political talking points. Again, concern for Palestinian civilians is legitimate. What is not legitimate is the way our institutions elevate one tragedy while shrugging at others that are just as dire or worse. That is a choice, and it is shaped by identity politics, performative guilt, and the steady creep of antisemitism hiding under the cloak of solidarity.
