Odisha government Sunday imposed a temporary shutdown of internet and social media services in some areas of Cuttack after sporadic violence broke out between two groups, officials said.

According to a notification issued by the Home Department, the temporary shutdown of the internet was taken to prevent the circulation of misleading or inflammatory posts that could trigger further unrest. The internet shutdown will remain in force from 7 p.m. October 5 to 7 p.m. October 6 (Monday).

Tension reportedly flared at Dargah Bazar earlier in the day when protesters came face-to-face with the police.
