BERRIEN COUNTY, MI – A 19-year-old man drowned while swimming in Lake Chapin, Berrien County sheriff’s deputies said.

The deceased was identified as Micha Eliel Joseph Harris, of Xenia, Ohio.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 4 p.m. report of a missing person Saturday, Oct. 4, near South Main Street at Lake Chapin.

Police said several people had been swimming and were trying to swim to the bridge pylons located in Lake Chapin.

Harris went underwater and did not resurface.

Lifesaving efforts by the other swimmers and people boating in the area were not successful, police said.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team recovered Harris’s body about four hours after he was reported missing.

Harris was a student at Andrews University, a private university in Berrien Springs.
