Former Newcastle and Northern Ireland goalkeeper Willie McFaul dies aged 82

Former Newcastle United stopper McFaul has passed away aged 82.

He joined Newcastle from Linfield in 1966 and made 386 appearances for the club before he retired in 1975.

At a time when Pat Jennings was establishing his reputation as one of the world’s greatest goalkeepers, McFaul won six caps and he was also Northern Ireland goalkeeping coach between 1994 and 1997.

McFaul, who had a brief stint in charge of Guam's national team in 2003, made his international debut in October 1966 at Windsor Park in a European qualifier against England when he came on as a substitute for Jennings.

He won the last of his caps in September 1973 against Bulgaria in a home World Cup qualifier.
