PERRY, Ga. — For more than three decades, fairgoers at the Georgia National Fair have lined up for steak sandwiches at two red, white and blue trailers without knowing the powerful story behind every purchase.

The VFW Post 6126 in Perry has operated food service at the fair for 36 years.

"We started out with just a little tent and an outside grill and now we have two big trailers," said Martin Habecker, commander of VFW Post 6126 and a 21-year Marine Corps veteran. "We sell so much product that we can't hardly keep up out there."

However, Habecker said the real impact happens long after the fair gates close.

He said every dollar raised from hamburgers, steak sandwiches and sodas goes directly back into the community to help local veterans.
