SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Sioux City Fire Rescue held open houses in all of its stations on Sunday, Oct. 5, starting Fire Prevention Week.

This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety,” focuses on safety when using products with lithium-ion batteries. Fire Prevention Week runs from Sunday, Oct. 5, until Saturday, Oct. 11.

John Nelsen, a lieutenant with Sioux City Fire Rescue, says with these batteries being used in many of our electronics, the public should use caution with them.

“Lithium-ion battery fires are surpassing our kitchen fires nationwide,” said Nelsen, “and it’s happened almost overnight just because the prevalence of lithium-ion batteries and buying ones that are not a listed product, they have a tendency to fail and start fires.”
