WACO, Texas (KWTX) — IRONMAN 70.3 Waco confirmed the death of a race participant during a triathlon event Sunday.

According to the organization, the athlete experienced a medical emergency during the swim portion of the race, the first discipline. Water safety personnel quickly identified the athlete, provided medical care, and transported them to a hospital, where the athlete later died.

“We send our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the athlete and will continue to offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time. Our gratitude goes out to the water safety personnel and first responders who worked quickly to assist the athlete,” the organization said in a statement .
