SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- This week marks National Fire Prevention week. Across the state, fire departments are holding events to raise awareness and offer fire safety tips to residents.
"Hopefully it just serves as a reminder that the fire prevention should be something practiced every day by everyone," Scott Deaver, Chief of Spearfish Fire Department, said.
This year's national campaign is educating residents on lithium-ion batteries that are commonly used to charge devices.
"The fear of that is that there is much higher sustained burning from lithium," Deaver said.
When people charge their cell phones, they may notice their phones heat up. Deaver said in addition to cell phones, electric cars with lithium-ion batteries take "copious amounts of water" to put out if they burn.
