COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — The former Coventry councilor charged with driving under the influence last month will face a judge later this week.

Robert Delellis, 57, resigned from the Coventry Town Council last Monday.

Delellis was taken into custody two weeks ago following a traffic stop on New London Turnpike, just over the town border in East Greenwich.

In a police report obtained by 12 News, a Rhode Island State Police trooper pulled Delellis over after his cruiser-mounted radar caught him driving 92 mph down I-95 South.

The trooper advised Delellis of the reason for the traffic stop, to which he replied, "I was not. There's no way I was [going] 92 [mph]. If anything, I was 70 [mph]."
