ST. LOUIS COUNTY — Police shot and injured a woman early Tuesday after she pointed a gun at an officer on Interstate 70 near the Earth City Expressway, authorities said.

The woman suffered a graze wound, police said.

St. Louis County went to check on a report of a suicidal person walking along the highway about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday on eastbound I-70, just east of the Blanchette Bridge.

When the officer approached the woman, she she pointed a gun at the officer and he fired a shot, said Vera Clay, a county police spokesperson.

The woman was taken to a hospital after being hit. Her condition was not released.

The eastbound lanes of I-70 were closed for hours for the police investigation.

The officer was not hurt. He is 28 and has been an officer for five years.
